Routes

Welcoming address

Dear guests,

We present you five round trips: a city tour through the old town of Stralsund with a focus on churches and former monasteries. And four spectacular circular routes around Stralsund, leading to Greifswald and across the southern part of Rügen. Although they only partially follow the established pilgrimage routes of Bridget and the Via Baltica, they will hopefully whet your appetite for pilgrimage in our beautiful region, with its churches, monasteries and cultural monuments.

Pilgrimage broadens the horizon: walking for long periods triggers an inner movement and leads to deceleration, relaxation and often to a change of perspective. It also opens you up to unexpected and often overlooked details and encounters along the way. And pilgrimage opens our hearts towards heaven.

The churches and monasteries give the hike a temporal depth. Christian faith has been lived here for centuries, they are full of stories and history, and today they act as “placeholders for silence”. And last but not least, they are cultural spaces in the best sense of the word.

We hope you enjoy discovering the circular tours. If you would like to spend the night on the paths, be sure to register in advance! You will find the contact details in the respective route descriptions.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the following for making this map a reality: the Hanseatic City of Stralsund, the Archbishopric of Berlin and in particular Marion von Brechan and Chaplain Maximilian Hofmann, the Protestant parish of Altefähr, the dairy Rügener Inselfrische, the LebensGut Frankenthal e.V., the Alte Pommernkate and the Rügener Inselbrauerei, as well as the Insel e.V. and the LandWert Hof. We would also like to thank Sabine Petters and the publisher Sven Steffen for their support.

Without them, this map would have remained just a nice idea.
