Places of interest

St. Nicholas' Cathedral (Greifswald)

Although the Church of St. Nicholas was first mentioned in 1263, it was only in 1457, with the founding of the university, that it became a collegiate church. The originally soaring Gothic tower crashed into the nave during a storm in 1650, causing catastrophic destruction. The call for donations was generously heeded by the people of Greifswald, Stralsund and Anklam, as well as the sovereign of Swedish Pomerania, Queen Christina. The cathedral was rebuilt just two years later. Since then, its 99.97-meter-high tower has been adorned with a baroque dome and lanterns that have so far defied all winds. The choir screen behind the altar, with its filigree decorations, was designed by the Greifswald architect Johann Gottlieb Giese in the years around 1823, when the cathedral was extensively renovated.
