Points of interest

Catholic funeral church of the Sacred Heart (Garz)

When the Catholic church was inaugurated over 100 years ago in 1913 on the initiative of Father Maximilian Kaller, Garz was one of the most important agricultural centers on the island. The so-called reapers came from Poland and the pews were full for Sunday services. But times change. Meanwhile, the church has become too big. Since 2018, the rear part of the church interior has therefore been occupied by an artistically designed urn burial site. It serves as a dignified burial place for all people, regardless of their religious denomination, and as a place of mourning. The parishioners hold services in the front part of the church. For the Feast of Christ the King in 1971, Father Oskar Reihs had a life-size Romanesque crucifix installed, with stigmata made of amber.
